RESEARCH AT THE CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY AND PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY LAB
Recent research focus of the CPPL have been the following among others:
· Examination of the role of fear (fearfulness/fearlessness) vs. general negative affect (anxiety, depression) in various disorders and conditions, including anxiety disorders, disruptive behavior disorders etc. Studies conducted used psychophysiological and Virtual Reality methodologies.
· Study of the ways in which people cope with unwanted emotions such as anxiety/fear and how their efforts to end negative experiences may maintain psychopathology. Correlational studies to establish the construct validity of coping strategies such as experiential avoidance, studies of the effects of unpleasant emotions on urges to smoke and use of substances. Used questionnaire methodologies and experimental methods such as stress induction using the PASAT task.
· Study of cognitive ways of emotion regulation, such as vigilance and avoidance of emotional stimuli. Examination of the vigilance-avoidance hypothesis in Social Anxiety Disorder using the visual search paradigm. Examination of the role of self-focused attention in SAD and its relation to vigilance and avoidance and other cognitive emotion regulation strategies.
· Study of alexithymia and its relation to emotion regulation strategies such as experiential avoidance. Experimental studies of emotion deficits in alexithymia and clinical studies of its association with symptoms and well-being.
